My Mother’s Garden: A Natural Alpine High

Certain places seem to fuse themselves into my mind.  For some reason the colours, sounds, and textures stand out vividly and clearly, etching an indelible memory.  Perhaps it’s the time of day that makes the place unforgettable.  Perhaps it’s the unexpectedness of its beauty.  Perhaps it’s everything that has led up to being in this place and at this time.

This summer, I added one of these places to my bank of treasured experiences.

The opportunity cropped up to pick up some fishermen via float plane.  They were in Spruce Lake in the South Chilcotin Mountain Park.  I jumped at the opportunity to fly out and hike back to the lodge where I live and work.  The fishermen got in and I began an unforgettable hike through the alpine.

Alpine meadows are in full bloom for a very brief time in July, and it was nothing short of a miracle to be there at just the right time to see the magnificence.  As I stepped up into the sparse lushness, I felt myself take in a deliberate breath as if drinking in the moment.

Truly, there are no adequate words to describe the beauty of that alpine vista. Purple lupine, yellow dogwood and red fireweed.  A balmy breeze carried a hint of lavender in the air.  Bright green trees, babbling brooks, deer on the path and warm rays of sun were all set against a backdrop of crystal blue skies and majestic mountains.  I was enjoying one of Mother Nature’s secret gardens.

I wanted to bottle this experience.  To splash a bit on during dreary winter days or stressful situations.  I stood still, closed my eyes and let the memory set.  I know that I can re-live that savoured moment for the rest of my life.  My wish is that everyone has the opportunity to experience at least one of these natural treasures.

(In memory of Mary Usaty, a Mother and Baba, who recently passed away and taught me the joy of undoing my bunzero.)

  1. Carol you certainly have Mother Nature’s beauty at your door step. I too have Mother Nature’s garden in my yard. Thanks for acknowledging my dear friend Mary Usaty’s memory.
By the way the star in Flashdance did the same Bunzero trick in the movie.

  3. Carol, thanks for this beautiful posting in memory of my Mom….being a Baba in her shadow is a tough act to follow! I came across this quite by chance. It’s ironic that an underwire “bunzero” began the chain of events that led up to her leaving us in body. But I will always have the legacy of the free and feisty spirit she left behind within me. Hugs, Anira xo
