Simply Superior: Time on the North Shore

I have left British Columbia to begin a new phase of life back in Ontario. After an enjoyable four-day drive across the Western Provinces, I found myself lingering around the northern shores of Lake Superior.

As soon as I entered Ontario the weather turned nasty with rain and dense fog. The irony of not seeing where I was going as I drove into my home province made me smile. While I am not quite sure how this new life change will unfold; I do know the general direction I want to go and will have to trust that the road will reveal itself a little bit at a time. So I proceeded very slowly.

After negotiating the fog, I took a detour and drove down to Lutsen, Minnesota to attend a very good friend’s birthday soiree. It was very special to reconnect with friends I have not seen for a very long time. Yes, I must admit I have a soft spot for the north shore of Minnesota and as it is probably one of my favourite places in the US.

Having survived the challenging border crossings with my car full of belongings being searched, I became stranded in Nipigon for two days. I had to remotely help the good folks back at the Lodge in BC to straighten out a few issues.

With all the headaches resolved, surprisingly the sun started to break through the clouds. The drive around Lake Superior was fabulous. With classical music playing I resumed my meandering style of travel, stopping whenever my heart desired, absorbing the energy of the big water and snapping lots of pictures.

Besides the gorgeous watery landscape and rugged, rocky scenery, some of the highlights from this trip around Superior included; the Terry Fox Memorial in Thunder Bay, Paddle To The Sea Park in Nipigon, home of the real Winnie bear cub in White River and the Canadian Goose statue in Wawa. I think everyone should drive around Lake Superior at least once in their lives. I know I plan to do this drive again.

  1. Glad you are returning to Ontario. Had a huge laugh when I saw Winnie the Pooh photo. Brought back some VERY, VERY OLD memories.
