Fireworks have always been part of big celebrations, especially in the summer. The spectacular bursts of multi-coloured sparkly lights exploding and then fading never ceases to amaze me. But I must admit to feeling just as much delight watching the simple and subtle dance of the firefly.
The performance usually starts just after dusk. Sitting quietly outside it begins when a soft blink catches my eye. Then a few more join in and before you know it the dance is in full swing. I never get tired of watching them because no two nights are the same, each has varying numbers, routines and programme lengths.
Regardless of the fact that the subtle blinking is a mating routine and can sometimes turn into a pulsing rave, witnessing this little seasonal miracle reminds me to look for and appreciate the simple things in life.
I almost slide into a meditative state when I sit and focus solely on the dance of the fireflies. It has become a wonderful way to settle down at night before bedtime. If I let them, the fireflies often carry away the cares of the day.
I will miss them when the weather turns cool and they go into hibernation. Until that time I will get outside or look out my window to watch and enjoy those magical creatures. When was the last time you sat outside and enjoyed watching the firefly fireworks?

Last year we had so many fireflies it almost lit up the yard. It was beautiful. The ones in the trees looked like Christmas lights twinkling. It is so peaceful just watching them.
This year we have not had many. Don’t know why.

Well enjoy the few that are around!
