Hockey played outside, on a frozen lake, under the stars in the middle of the mountains is an event not soon to be forgotten.  Frequently, after dinner, the staff and guests at the lodge will lace up and take to the ice to participate in one of Canada’s favourite pastimes.

The rules on Tyaughton Lake are simple; everyone is welcome to play, anyone can watch, but no dogs allowed.  Full body contact is discouraged unless the snow banks are at least four feet high. Beverages are best stored in non-spill containers and tucked into snow drifts.  Spectators take turns keeping Dusty, one of the old lodge dogs, off the ice and away from the puck.

The various players include a combination of; staff & guests, the young & less young, men & women, hockey & figure skaters, skiers & riders. The last game had an international flair with five countries represented across the two teams (Canada, US, Australia, Germany and Switzerland).  Language differences were not a problem because of the universality of hand gestures, hugs and cheers.

Most players are not that great, some have never skated before and yet everyone seems to have a wonderful experience. Even when the homemade Zamboni breaks down and the ice gets pretty bumpy the friendly competition always goes on.  Funny how the score always ends up tied.

What I like about these events is the sheer playfulness. The rules are few, everyone is encouraged to participate and there is such great camaraderie when the game is done.  Perhaps this could be a new business model; give everyone a chance, make the best of whatever conditions are present, play fair and have fun!
